Please
wait. We're Under Construction!
"Hurry up and finish constructing, you dummy! I'm getting tired of waiting for
Shalay to start her project on "Sunlight and Its effect on
glue or rubber ".
That Tutor took her on a 5-mile walk to Anderson Park today. All he talked about
was that project...two and one half hours of it! I'll try to remember what he
talked about...below."
Preparing for a Science Project...Sunlight and its effect on glue or rubber"
Shalay came prepared to exercise. She had on her shorts and jogging jacket at this morning hour of 8:00 AM. I, as an exercise nut, was eager to take her on one of my "aerobics- speed walks" of 5-miles or so. Shalay started slowly as we moved down the steep incline that took us towards Anderson Park. I, of course, couldn't wait to warm up, and was off with my "praise dance and speed walk" as soon as I hit the hill.
Shalay began to jog. She jogged for approximately 1/2 mile. Then I caught up to her and began my questioning and lecturing on her Science Project that dealt with the effects of sunlight on plastics and glue.
It was amazing...the things we discussed...off the tops of our heads. Below are just a few of them!
The origin of the Universe.....Big Bang Theory; Doppler radar; red shift; planetary systems, the sun; moon; earth; force of attraction between bodies ( F = m1 m2/ d 2 ); tides, orbits; sunlight; electromagnetic spectrum; visible light; signatures of chemicals in the spectrum; spectrometers; sunspots; magnetic disturbances of the sun and the effects on communication on earth; the atomic fission of the sun; galaxies; the speed of light (186, 000 miles per second); and how long it takes light to reach earth from the sun (approximately 8 minutes); how long it would take light to reach us from some distant star or galaxy; light year is a distance and not a time; light from some distant object might have started out before our star (sun) was born! Or sun will die in 4+ billion years! we are looking back in time when we see the light from distant stars! The Rover Mars Vehicle; The Origin of the Species by Charles Darwin in the mid 1800's; the controversy concerning Evolution vs. the Creation Theory; The Beagle of Charles Darwin and the Galapagos Islands; geography vs. skin color; Afro-Americans and melanin; European and skin conditions caused by the sun's rays; sun screen...why or why not use it? cosmic rays; microwaves; radio waves; infrared waves; ultraviolet waves; rainbows; origin of man; diseases and the fight for survival of all living things; Shalay's sister, Janiece's ear infection and amoxicillin; tetracycline; insects and how many species there are; humans and how many species there are; Venus fly traps; praying mantis; photosynthesis; oceanography; amoeba, paramecium and other microscopic animals, all with defense systems; respiratory systems, digestive systems, and a need to reproduce themselves...at all costs. "Change or Die" (my evolution principles)
We were like students of Isaac Asimov, as we walked and talked about falling bodies; the flight of a projectile; the angle of fire and the distance down range. We dissected Newton's Laws of Motion and brought them "home" by talking about Normal forces Vs. Weight. We discussed gravity and the universal gravitation constant "G". We related Physics to every thing we saw!
Related formulas and concepts in Shalay's Physical Science Book:
F = MA; velocity = distance/time ; acceleration = (velocity)/(time); s = 1/2Gt2 ; falling bodies in a vacuum; units and the conversion of; Satellites in orbit; The Clark Orbit; centrifugal force; inertia (my expertise...I worked on Inertial Guidance Systems, i.e., The Minuteman Missile One back in 1961!)
Things to review with Shalay:
Units and the conversion of same; Newtons; units of acceleration, velocity, mass; light-years and the distances to other galaxies; Satellite technology
We discussed so much more....but we focused primarily on....the Sun.
Shalay received enough information to begin her project on sunlight and its effect on rubber or glue. She was reminded of our CD-ROM disks, and the Internet, as well as our "valuable links" on this site. I will monitor her progress in this respect...after we do the sine, cosine and tangent of right triangles.
I thank God, as I twisted and turned, skipped and danced to several songs on my IPOD. I moved along Anderson Park, as I always do, and danced along the fitness course to "In the Sanctuary". It is a fast-paced religious song that allows me my cadence. I thank God with hands outstretched...for giving me to power to function and the mind to function spiritually...in carrying on the work of.....A Free Tutoring Service: Preparing for the Future"
Jamise (23) came by: Ashley (16) came by: Keyotta (19) did her Southern University homework on the computer; Jarrell (19) filled us in on his new job as a Customer Sales Rep at a major manufacturing firm in Torrance; Shalay slept because she was indeed "worn out" by all of the activities of "A Free Tutoring Service". She is now a definite part of the fanatical race to gain as much knowledge as is humanly possible...in the shortest amount of time...with complete understanding...enough to teach others...of the things she has learned! God bless our efforts!
Cleophas Mike McAlpin....until tomorrow
