A Sight Diversion......"Get Out of The Street!"     My Son....A Police Officer

Director of  "A Free Tutoring Service.....Cleophas Mike McAlpinSo far as the "Free Tutoring Service"  goes....We are right here!

Occasionally, I am called upon to write an editorial. Some of my editorials can be found on this website: others in one of my many hard drives. This one  will forever be here as a reminder to all Law Enforcement Officers........To enforce the Law, but use common sense in doing it!

I live in a Mobile Home park, consisting of 500 homes: down the street is another similar park, consisting of 500 homes. I live in what is called, "a County area", which to me is a damaging thing. You see, County areas such as this, do not have sidewalks everywhere; they are not patrolled by Law Enforcement as City streets are; residents are left to their own devices as to how to negotiate transportation...and to that end...some have to walk the streets in order to facilitate movement about this "county area" known as Rancho Dominguez.

I, for one, have lived here for approximately 12 years. I have walked all over this area. As a matter of fact, my mobile home park has no sidewalks, but a lot of people walk down the steep incline to this park, each and every day....as do I. If one wants to venture farther, such as I do in my exercise routine, one has to walk the street known as Laurel Park Road, which has no sidewalks; walk along some parts of Victoria, which has no sidewalks; along a street known as Dominguez, which has no sidewalks...enroute to Anderson Park...some 3-4 miles away....with no sidewalks. For this is the route taken by me in my exercise routine...doing aerobic - speed - walking along the way.

On this day, January 20, 2010...approximately 11:20 AM....I took off for Anderson Park...down the steep entrance to this park (no sidewalks) ; along Laurel Park Road (no sidewalks) ; up Victoria Blvd ( one long block of sidewalk...but littered with rain soaked leaves, twigs, and berries....that could cause a fall and a crippling injury); and then to Dominguez street (no sidewalks)....through an industrial area (no sidewalks)....to Anderson Park. Along this route, there is one long block containing a littered sidewalk...that one anticipating completing a Los Angeles Marathon on March 21, 2010...26.2  miles...from Dodger Stadium  to the Santa Monica Pier...would be crazy to submit himself to the possibility of slipping on debris and tearing a hamstring, or some other injury.

Man! Was I motoring in high gear as the clouds began to roll in...another  major Pacific storm! The ground was still wet from the last pounding...and there was a slight drizzle to warn of the next terrific storm. That did not deter me, as I moved along my route.....moving into the street....very near to the side of some trucks that lined the one block of sidewalk, along Victoria Boulevard. I had anticipated I would have to move to the street, facing oncoming traffic for a short spell, because I had slipped on wet leaves and nearly fallen, in years gone by.....Being 75 years of age, and being able to dance, skip, jump and speed- walk...all while praising God, is my gift for giving so many years of my life in the Service of assisting all students with Math and Science for free! I had walked these streets many, many years and had completed several Los Angeles Marathon, Long Beach Marathons, Ten K runs, and etc. I was focused and determined to do the one on March  21, because I had torn a hamstring back in 2005,  causing me so much pain in the Los Angeles Marathon of 2006, that I had to quit at mile 10.

"Get  out of the street", someone yelled as I traversed the one block of Victoria that had a debris littered cement sidewalk. I loved walking on asphalt, because it seemed to have a bounce to it, preventing injuries to knees and legs. I had to remove my ear plugs to see who was shouting. There was a Sheriff's vehicle parked in the middle of the street, with no lights flashing. I wondered what he wanted and who he was talking to.

"Get out of the street", he ranted again. I thought he was crazy for making a target of himself along Victoria: cars and trucks came along this downward stretch with open full throttle.....some exceeding 80 miles per hour as they "opened up and set all pistons into high gear!  I thought about his Sheriff's vehicle being hit by one of those high speeders, and quickly moved to the littered sidewalk....to save him. If he had been struck, he and his vehicle would have been knocked back down Victoria Boulevard, all the way down to Laurel Park Road! Thank God, I perhaps....saved his life!

I assumed the Black Sheriff meant for me to traverse the littered sidewalk, to which I did (one second), until he was out of sight. Then I, along with several other walkers, joggers, and bus travelers-walkers, took to the street...Again I thanked God for allowing me a rapid movement to that sidewalk, in order to save him!

My editorial is to allow such Law Enforcement Officers a chance at what John Q. Public has to say about his job. There are times when common sense dictate actions. Would he have been so inclined to spout and yell if there were a large hole in the sidewalk, preventing its travel? Or was he upset that I, a Black man had the nerve to "act lak I wuz a gang-banger", and walk down some desolate street, breaking the law for a few seconds? What Idiot would stop to scream to the top of his lungs, when 100 or so, more  Officers, had always given me a "Thumbs Up" when they saw me? I had to ask some questions....Is he tired of his job? Did his wife or girlfriend leave him? Which side of the bed did he get up on? Does he know what the word "exercise" mean? How much does he weigh? Or does he exercise at all? Has he ever walked or run 2 miles? When? 20 years ago? Is he a Racist towards his own Race? Why don't he stop some of the autos doing a maximum of 80 miles per hour doing certain hours in the morning and afternoon? His Sheriff's vehicle would stand as an open target were it 7:00 AM on a working day!

Boy, I couldn't hardly wait to get to this computer to tell all Law Enforcement Personnel....to lay off of the Marathoner Trainers....they are much smarter than you think. If at all possible, become a Marathoner, and you will know.....THAT TRAINING MUST TAKE PLACE IN THE STREETS. AND IF YOU DO NOT KNOW.....PAY $135 DOLLARS TO DO ONE...AND FIND YOURSELF SOME STREET TO TRAIN. MAYBE YOU WILL GET LUCKY AND LIVE IN A "COUNTY AREA", WHERE MOST OFFICERS OF THE LAW RESPECT THE OLDER ATHLETES! THEY SEEM TO BE IN WILD ANTICIPATION.....THAT THEY TOO....SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO A 26.2 MILE MARATHON AT AGE 75....DANCING...SKIPPING...JUMPING....SINGING.....LISTENING TO AN IPOD...AND WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT....GIVING ALL GLORY TO GOD ALMIGHTY...AND MOVING IN HIS NAME...AS THE TEARS OF HAPPINESS RAIN DOWN....TO MATCH THE DOWNPOUR OF PAST AND FUTURE STORMS!
