Wishing everyone, everywhere...A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! From Shalay, Jarrell and Mike

December 19, 2009     (9:30 AM until 3:00 PM) Passing the Torch?   Shalay (front) pauses from her "Volunteer"  tutoring of Algebra Two to Destiny, 16 (seated with red jacket), and Ms. Griffin (gray sweater)....Jarrell, New Director...looks on... after delivering a motivation lecture to the students, and an overview of  his... "A Free Tutoring Service: Preparing for the Future". Cleophas Mike McAlpin can only sit in amazement as the younger generation takes over the duties of  the Tutoring Service.  Other photos are shown below.

Shalay says..."I helped Destiny with going over her Algebra Two homework. We went over Polynomials and the basics of adding, subtracting, and multiplying negative and positive numbers. After going over three examples and breaking the equations down step by step, she was able to do a few problems on her own. We also did the "elimination method"  of solving simultaneous equations. Mr. McAlpin dealt with complex numbers and Absolute Value complex number problems. There was a venture into the Internet to discover such problems as   3 + 4 i  is solved by using the Pythagorean Theory (C ² = A ² + B ²).....letting 3 being equal to "A", while letting the imaginary part (4i) being the vertical component of a right triangle (4). For example   Z ²  =  A ² + B ²  or

Z ║ =  3² + 4²   = 9 + 16  = 5   So the solution is equal to 5.  Note ....  the negative sign in the absolute value problems is of no consequence, because of the squaring of numbers.....Cleophas Mike McAlpin...Tutor

Always remember that for a 3,4,5 right triangle, it is a "gimmie" that if one side is 3 and the other is 4, then the hypotenuse is most definitely.......5! This is a "high school exit exam problem"!

9:30 AM...We picked up Destiny and her mother from the Blue Line Station at Del Amo. It was off to the races when we arrived at Dominguez Hills, as Shalay took to tutoring Destiny and her mother in Algebra Two. Her homework was tackled after an introduction and motivational speech by Jarrell. Mr. Mike and Shalay worked for more than 5 hours, on this Saturday...as all had a great time with learning. Destiny intimated that "she loved it over here"!   That was evidenced by her working problems in her head (at my insistence!) She received a constant dose of "hi fives", as she is already on her way to becoming an all "A" student. I took her back to the Blue Line station at 3:30 PM! or thereabouts. Ti-man, Destiny and Ronald will be coming over this upcoming Tuesday, as the students do not want to simply lay around during Christmas break, they want to work problems!  God is Good! Shalay will perhaps, come over too!!!! "Little John (previous pages) has completed my 40 page assignment if the Electrical Workers book, and we will review his study when he arrives one day this week....We are truly on a high- level- learning- plane!

Miguel, 28 years of age, is asking us to assist with his G.E.D. He is an excellent electrician and assists us...as we assist him with his education. In all, there are now 6 middle and high school students....and 6 young adults......as we are on a roll!!
