Ne-Ne says..... "Read a little of Carson's History......before your time!  It's fascinating!   Below!"

  "I don't think I was ever that small" !       At Birth!

"I bet you didn't know that my Grandfather, Mr. Cleophas "Mike" McAlpin, was the first Scoutmaster of Carson back in 1970 or thereabouts. The Troop was # 238, I think. It was the very first Scout Troop in the new City of Carson.  They met at the new Ambler School on Sherman Drive. As a matter of fact, the Troop was in place before what was called "Gardena" (County of Los Angeles Parcel) was even founded..... as the City of Carson! Ask Mr. Gil Smith...He became the "Centerview Homeowners Association's" President....to later become the Mayor of Carson! Mr. McAlpin turned the Troop over to Mr. Harris Rumph (now deceased) of Sherman Drive, after 2 or 3 years of intense scouting!

Mr. Mike lived at 406 E. Sherman Drive, Carson,  from March of 1965 (a new house) to November of 1992! He continually improved the property to the point that the house looked like the "Beverly Hills" variety. He then turnedthe house over to his son. His oldest son Gregory (attended Gardena schools), was in the new Scout Troop, and they went all over the place, visiting places such as the Scout Camp at Brea Canyon (way out East on Imperial Highway),  and Leo Carrillo State Campground in Malibu. They often camped out on weekends; they competed with other Troops at Jamborees; and they met each and every week at the Ambler School or at the home of Mr. McAlpin. Mr. Mike was adamant about the boys keeping the new school in "mint condition", and he hollered often at the boys about "fooling around" in that very pretty auditorium! He was just as adamant when gangs began to invade the school, setting up camp within the grounds and raising "holy hell". Of course, the Sheriff' helicopters were soon on the scene to chase the bad guys away. The new residents in close proximity to the school fought mightily  to discourage "gang activity" at their new school! Of course it was the new residents against the gangs; bullets flew down Sherman Drive at times.....even  to find the thigh of Gregory....and nearly end the lives of his two brothers, Ken and Duane. Gregory grabbed his two brothers, bleeding himself, and pulled them to safety! The Boy Scout Troop stood as an alternative to gangs and other negative influences that seemed to invade every aspect of life in the new City of Carson!

Eddie Gayle McAlpin was unlucky enough to have married Mr. Mike back  in 1960! He utilized her often to take the Boy Scouts places. You see, assistance was very hard to find, especially since all of the new residents of "Centerview" were busily planting trees, grass, plants and fixing up their new homes. It was extremely difficult to get the parents to participate! That was no deterrent for Mr. McAlpin, as he recruited Eddie Gayle to take the Scouts in his other station wagon to "Scout Places". Eddie Gayle never hesitated.......she still faces the same situation today, as she picks up students from such places as Curtiss Middle School, King Drew Magnet School, Carson High School, and at times, residences in Carson......bringing students over to tutoring and taking some of them back home again! Thank you, Momma Gayle, for all of your support..... down through the years....Mr. Mike McAlpin goes about his job as if it were a very high paying one...instead of one that offers "0" dollars for hard work! 8 years of Free Tutoring have been completed with absolutely.....no salary! For anyone!

Oftentimes, horns that are "not tooted" are "not heard". My Grand Father and Grand Mother are not so inclined to be "Horn-Tooters". They go silently about the work that God has laid out before them! And in case one does not know.......God is listening....and He is ordering each and every one of their steps!

This is Ne-Ne...extremely educated at the old age of 2 years and 11 months. "Perhaps, it is because I have been in the presence of Free Tutoring students for most of my life, going on most Field Trips, interacting with the Professional Community of Doctors, Attorneys, CEO's and the like; watching grades go from "F" to "A"; and clapping my hands at New Philadelphia AME Church, right along with all of "them kids" my Grandfather brings to Church with him! He made me a Volunteer Tutor to tell all........to please don't smoke!"

Our Photo Album will now begin with a New Series of Numbering. With the Year 2007 right around the Corner, the pages will now become "January 2007 Page 1..and Continue month by month, with the year 2007 to let us know when the photo was taken 

 As usual, our intensity will increase during the month of January of 2007. It will increase with the addition of new students from Carson (Gregory and Brianna), and with the older ones....... at least 12! We will have an educational   Production, "Show me what you've got", as usual, in March of 2007. Please plan on attending: see "education in action" as the students are "put through their paces" in math and science before the Parents, Professionals and Leaders!
