This E-Mail Conversation was
held lately between a Teacher and a Tutor (me)
To Ms. Teacher from Mr. McAlpin:
Please be more considerate of those Educators who make attempts to
elevate the grade point average of underprivileged students of all Races and
Ethnicity! Speak to them about failing grades as they occur, before you decide
to offer up an "F" at the end of a semester or Progress Report!

Teachers at other schools and have them cooperate with me!

Response from Teacher:
I'm confused by the above statement. Student grades are ALWAYS
posted on-line weekly for the student and parents to access. My door is always
open at 7:30am everyday for students that need help. My email address is
available to students and parents to contact me with any concerns they may have.
Agenda and information from class is posted on line for easy access. These are
just some of the things I do. At no point are they notified of their grades only
at report card time.
I hope ( Student ) is doing well. Contact me if you wish to offer some
constructive suggestion that I can reasonably consider.
p.s. I don't recall not cooperating with you.
Response from Tutor:
Mrs. Teacher:
As
you can see, ( Student ) is doing extremely well with her straight "A"
Progress report at King Drew Magnet High School. She is extremely brilliant, and
a very hard worker; that is the reason for the 4.0 GPA.
I
can tell you now that I felt intimidated that I was not allowed to interact with
you on her behalf. The one meeting that was set up was cancelled by you.
Sometimes,
I sort of came to your class, with the purpose in mind of speaking to you about
(Student) (at the closing of school) and felt you didn't take time to speak to
me. I felt I was something insignificant in your eyesight. Too often am I looked
at with "unfriendly eyes" when I enter a school or classroom to check
on my students. I am an extension of the Parent and the paperwork in the Office
gives me that privilege.
Teachers
must realize that not
everyone has a computer;
most oftentimes due to economic hardship. Parents can't take off work to meet
with teachers because of economic hardship; If economics dictates who
owns a computer, let me tell you that most Minorities do not own one. They are
unable to check on grades “on - line”; unable to send you an e-mail and
unable to communicate with you.....and so......you have failing students.....and
a confused and frustrated Executive Director of a nonprofit corporation. Another
thing to consider: the mail you send to parents oftentimes find itself in the
trash dumpster.....before a parent even sees it! Students "toss it"
because they are afraid, or know, it has failing grades. Is there some way of
letting parents know that students are failing without sending the information
over the Internet....and some students do not own a computer?
So
you see, communication is vital to those who are at a lower economic level.
You might think of ways of communicating with these individuals. Perhaps a
Sunday telephone call or make yourself available to receive telephone calls from
parents on some weekends.
I
am by no means a Teacher, nor do I qualify to be. I am only working for
free
( 8 years and 24 hours per week) to see if I can make educational opportunity available for all students....and not just those
at the "top of the social economic ladder"! That has gone on too
long.
Thank
you for your timely reply. You may follow ( Student's ) progress towards
becoming a Medical
Doctor on
