Devin (16), a well-mannered young man. Devin attends Carson High School. He is not afraid to tell you that he is way, way behind in Mathematics. That will soon be taken care of, as I take him into the deep waters of basic math, and then into Algebra One and Geometry One! I am very proud of Devin; his intensity and thirst for knowledge seem to match my desire to teach him all that I know. He responds by only taking a break when I ask him to, and he gives himself problem after problem to insure that he knows the subject well. To those who are interested in Devin, you need not be concerned about his academics. He is well on his way to elevating his grade point average.......That is a personal challenge of mine! He is always here as my schedule dictates, and I am always here to teach him all about math and science.
I took Devin into this Website and made him acquainted with our Valuable Links. I took him into each exam and showed its contents. I told him his photo would soon appear, and here it is! Devin loves astronomy and we discussed the galaxy as well as Polaris, the North Star. He was surprised to know that it sat right outside my rear door, and to the North sky. I explained the Big Dipper, and how to find the North Star by drawing a line through the two bottom stars (cup) of the Big Dipper, the first bright star you come to, being Polaris, the North Star.
We discussed the speed of light: Devin relating that the speed of light was 10,000 miles per second.....to which I corrected him to say 186,000 miles per second! I explained the time it takes light to reach us from the Sun (8.33 minutes) and the Moon ( a few seconds), as well as from stars across the vastness of the Universe. I ended my lecture by saying the expanse of the Universe seems to be infinite, as well as the miniature! The scanning electron microscope can magnify up to 35, 000 times, yet what lies beyond that "very miniature", or what lies outside of our ability to see into the Universe with our Hubbel Space Telescope is un-imaginable! On both sides, we are completely in the dark, and if anyone thinks otherwise, he should pray to God for an understanding because we as mere mortals........do not know what lies beyond our senses! We are limited, and only God knows how small things can get, or how far they lie.....way out into the Universe!
Devin looked surprised when I said, "The Earth and everything we see, might not have been here, when the light from some far off Galaxy started out, to finally reach our eyes."
I tried to explain "Light Year" as being a distance and not a time! That was a new concept for Devin. I explained how to find the distance light travels in one year....and Devin seemed to grasp the concept.
Through Astronomy, I will move Devin to a higher level in Math, and all of the Sciences. I thank God for giving me this insight!
