Kamaryn (14)......a new student
of old. (background: house under construction by Mr. Mike and Ed.....a
great project....to be used to instruct students.
Karamyn was an 8 year old when she visited our tutoring sessions with an older sister. And now, she is 14 years old , and a student in the tutoring service. We quickly got to work on her Algebra Two homework.
(A + B) ² = (A + B) (A +B) = A ² + 2AB + B ² (use the F.0.i.L. method)
(A - B) ² = (A - B) (A -B) = A ² - 2AB + B ² "
(A² - B² ) = (A - B) (A +B) (the middle term always disappears!)
We reviewed factoring polynomials until Kamaryn was an expert. We did some problems without the use of paper! We reviewed all of the problems in her Algebra Two book, and will solidify our knowledge when she returns on next Tuesday. Again, I must apologize to those who called me, but had to leave because the guard refused entry. That was a terrible mistake on my part, and I will try not to repeat it. Please call the day before if you plan on attending our session. I must make a list then and give it to the guard.
Christine called to inform me of her progress in her Charter High School in southwest Los Angeles: Ebony is doing extremely well in her Middle School Charter School. Shalay is also doing very well. I worked with Ronald (new student) on his Algebra One homework: it dealt with "greater than, less than and equal to" expressions. Ronald became expert with his assignment after an hour of working problems....such as 12 > x + 2...(made up example). Ronald was told to switch across the symbol to place "x" on the left side, but also making the "greater than" symbol, a "less than" symbol. We did line graphs of every problem. And I had Ronald to draw up a few notes relating to plotting a line graph...noting that an open circle meant " a less than or great than": adding the "equal", means a solid circle....to which an arrow is attached to each...when the direction of the arrow is determined! Wow! It is much simpler to do it, than to try and explain it!
Kamarryn came over last Saturday to engage in the division of polynomials for her Algebra Two class. I worked with her for more than 2 hours on her homework. She is now confident she will make an "A" grade on her upcoming examination. The most difficult part for her was to remember the factoring of ( A ³ + B ³ ) and the factoring of ( A ³ - B ³ ) Try remembering the formulas for each.
Ms. Woodlief....would you please tell the class that I apologize. I look forward to seeing them on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.....and some Saturdays (see previous page for schedule) Previous Page
Excerpts from the past: below
"My Time" occurs once in a while. Since I had briefly introduced Tyneesha and Ijau to the English and Metric Systems of Measurements, I delved deeper into the subject with all of the students. I asked them to stop doing homework for a few minutes, because it was now "MY TIME". I had previously shown the two our Valuable Links icon, and in particular www.sparknotes.com to be used as a tool to do their homework.
