April 16- 19, 2007: A New Student of Curtiss Middle School, Star (click on her photo)
Monday...students in attendance.....Chayce, Tah-Mee and Star. A Few of My Predictions!
I held an interview with Star's parents for more than one hour. They are in tune to education and that made me very happy. I am afraid I "talked too much" due to my excitement in finding wonderful parents who stand totally behind their children in every way, especially education. I am absolutely positive Star will not only become a straight A student, but a great Singer, too! She has a very unique singing style, and she will quickly rise to the........Top of the Star Charts!
Tah-Mee did her homework and did an extra-credit work draft of her upcoming school subject, The Human Brain. I went into PrintShop to give her a beginning, after going to Wikipedia Encyclopedia and researching the Human Brain. I began the document, and Tah-Mee soon took over. Her mother, another Star, Starlett, came in to assist with this project. Tah-Mee has committed herself to becoming the straight A student that she deserves to be, and this will occur quite rapidly!
Star did her homework on our "fast computer"......3.0 Gigahertz Speed
April 17, 2007
After a grueling day in Court....all day....I returned to find:
Shalay, Ijau, Tyneesha, Star, Brianna, Kahmya, Jonathan, Katy, Brandon
After the students had consumed a good deal of soup and drink, I proceeded to have them tell of school periods, activities and homework. It was a very informative session that saw Shalay discuss the Holocaust and World War Two, Brianna discuss the Atomic blast at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Tyneesha tell of her State Testing Exams, Ijau tell of his Pythagorean Theorem Homework, Katy tell of her Photography class at Bellflower High, Brandon tell of his work at Curtiss, and Brianna to tell of her recently acquired gpa of 3.8! Jonathan couldn't remember all until threatened to stand in front of the students until he remembered all......he soon told of his work at King Drew. This session lasted for approximately 30 minutes with me interjecting tidbits about the Renaissance, Hitler, Atomic Radiation, Trigonometry of Sine, Cosine and Tangent of Right Triangles ..... and all other information pertaining to all I had heard of school work at the various schools in California.
The students did their homework afterwards, with me lecturing Jonathan and Ijau on right triangles. I had written an Internet Exam for Ijau and we proceeded to do the exam.
I thank you, God, for this day. It has been a wonderful day that you have sent my way. I pray for the students, and I pray for a peaceful solution to the problems that face each and every one of them. I give you thanks for caring parents and students, dedicated to improvement. I give you thanks for making all know of your Power......as you watch over us....and we know you can do anything but fail!
We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us!
Thursday, April 19, 2007: A very exciting afternoon of Free Tutoring!
Students in attendance: Brandon, Tyneesha, Ijau and Star......all of Carson's Curtiss Middle School
Eddie Gayle picked up the students and brought them to tutoring. It was a "short day" at school, with the school letting out at 2:00PM. It was an even longer day for me, as I had been extremely busy all day preparing for a crisis situation with one of my students. Nonetheless, I put everything aside and began my tutoring. Then all of a sudden, a strange thought entered my mind: Why don't I take the students out for an afternoon of tutoring? After all, I really needed a change of venue, being that I had been on the computer all day in preparation for an event on April 20th.
I took my Periodic Table of the Elements chart and had Ijau place it into our van. Then I told the surprised students that we would be going to the bowling alley, Cal Bowl, in Long Beach. There we would do a bit of tutoring and later engage ourselves in a few moments of free fun!
I lectured the students amidst the thunder of bowling balls striking pins. The students were in tune to the groupings of Elements and the characteristics of Elements and hardly heard any of the sounds of the bowling alley! They asked question after question and drew the questioning eyes of passer bys, as they saw what was going on.....and let out wide grins!
It was then on the adjacent Fun Center, with its many video games and entertainment. I gave each student approximately 8 dollars, and told them to go and have a good time. That they did! And so did I! Of course, I defeated Ijau in a game of air hockey (he will probable deny this), and gave him a thumbs up for lasting in a score of 6 to 4 with me. Of course, I consider myself a star with regards to "whupping the tar out of teens" in video games such as Street Fighter, and the like. Air hockey is no different! The new student, Star, seemed in shock as she happily participated in all of the wondrous video games at this location. And then it was time to go the adjacent business, A Pizza Parlor! There again, I gave the students enough money to buy a slice of pizza and a soda, or whatever they choose to buy with the 2-3 dollar gift.
A Sergeant Major drifted by and began conversation with the students. They listened attentively at his lecture on the Military and I had to break up this lively conversation, give him a business card, and return to our Tutoring Location. Brandon's mother called on my cell phone to make me know that Brandon would be receiving an award at Curtiss Middle School at around 5:00PM and I took him, along with the other students to this great event. Karen made the ceremony after being trapped, as so many of us often are, in Los Angeles' horrific afternoon traffic rush hour. She made it though, and I took Tyneesha and Star back to our Tutoring Location to obtain backpacks. Tyneesha's mother came to pick her up, and I took Star to her home in Long Beach. She said her family was unable to pay our required donation of $35 a month to the Tutoring Service, and I simply said, "That does not present a problem for us......we will take up the slack for you....as long as you perform to the best of your ability, striving to become an all "A" student." Star concurred. I returned home at approximately 6:30 PM and immediately fell asleep at my favorite location.....my family room couch.
God is good, all of time. I thank you God, in advance of what You will do on April 20th. Your Power is overwhelming and I know You are watching the events that will unfold on April 20 in Long Beach. Let the Miracle that you will perform take shape and for all to see.....as I have already seen it done....as in times gone by......for You can do anything....but fail.
I thank You in advance as I lay down at Peace with the World, and with a peace that You have given me in knowing that I am doing my very best to carry out Your Will....Amen
