Breaking the Sound Barrier!

Lectures! Again and Again! It's "My Time", Again! They started again on April 1, 2007 when Jamise (24) and Essence (20) came over. After a short visit, they moved to get into Jamise's car, but not before I gave them a short lecture on Astronomy.  http://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/sl9/  (click!)  J P L Home Page:  (Astronomy)

Upon entering the car, Essence made a remark about the "bright star" in the western sky.

"That is no star", I said. "That's the Planet, Venus".  http://sse.jpl.nasa.gov/planets/profile.cfm?Object=Venus (click)

I took a  10-minute lecture (And Still I Rise...From Failure in Schools!) to convince both of the young ladies that the "star" was indeed the beautiful Planet, Venus; being the 3rd brightest object in the sky because of the trapped CO in its atmosphere.....unable to leave because of the Greenhouse Effect....to forever glow brilliantly because of its proximity to the  Sun ! (click) The western sky after the sun has set, lends itself to the beauty of a Planet, relative in size to Earth, sometimes connected with "Love" because of its beauty....due to the sun shining on it, as it shines on all of the other Planets... http://sse.jpl.nasa.gov/planets/index.cfm    Of course Jupiter, the Gas Giant, is the 4th brightest body in the Heavens with its four moons of IO, (click) Ganymede, Callisto and Europa.

I pointed out the North Star, Polaris, and told how to find it in the sky. I told of my experience as a "night surveyor" in an Artillery Unit in the 101st Airborne (paratrooper) Group. We navigated our survey by the stars, and did a fine job of locating our Mortar Battery and our Howitzer Battalion on the battlefield. I suppose that gave me the right to be heard when I finally got an...."Oh, that is so interesting"!

I also pointed out a few Constellations and other objects. The young ladies were in complete awe, as I ended my lecture with a quick "goodbye" and was back inside in a flash! 

Mervyns Department store in West Los Angeles was giving me a 15% discount, on top of the 40% one offered. I sought to take advantage of this fine offer by gathering Shalay, Ebony, Ne-Ne and Christine and hauling them off the Mervyns on Sepulveda and La Tijera. This location was close to my Dentist friend, Doctor Gardner Beale at 8930 Sepulveda (click), and I thought about having him meet these students. I considered he was probably in his favorite vacation paradise, Thailand, and decided to visit him later. I also thought about treating Shalay, Ebony and Christine to an Easter outfit. Ne-Ne, of course, was a "done-deal", as I always keep this 3-year old "Volunteer Tutor"  (click) looking her best!

The Lecture began. It began with the "traffic cameras" mounted in Inglewood, and a Police Officer's car nearby. It began when I cautioned the students about running traffic lights when they became of age, as well as the Officer who might turn on his "Radar Gun" to catch them speeding.  See below, Doppler Effect:  

No one knew much about Radar as we approached LAX, and I thought it was a good idea to inform them of it, especially since an improvement to a runway made the morning news. No more near misses for aircraft it said! Along with Radar, the planes taking off and landing would now be safe! I decided to lecture the students on this newfound "radar" word! I suppose I was qualified to teach, seeing that I was an Advanced Class Amateur Radio Operator ;(click) as well as A Functional Test Inspector, as one who gave Autonetics' Technicians (North American Aviation Electronics Division) a "thumbs up" when their "Wave Guides" did their thing in Minute Man Missile Inertial Guidance Systems Technology!

Doppler Effect: When a train moves toward you and then passes you by, what sounds do you hear?

That question took me into (1) The speed of Sound (2) The Range of Human Hearing ( 3) How our ears work (4) The change in frequency as a train passes us by: See Below: Doppler... (4) The speed of light Vs. the Speed of Sound (5) The concept of Frequency, Period, The Red Shift, Blue Shift, Our Expanding Universe,  and a host of other topics. 

Christine  click) seemed a bit bored as I spat out these Scientific Principles. 

To move ahead a bit, the young ladies picked out garments at Mervyn's and looked at me because I had promised them something for listening to my ranting and raving about "Doppler Radar". They picked beyond their monetary limit

I asked Christine about the Speed of Light and Sound.....She seemed in shock when I told her, "You will get absolutely nothing unless you can tell me the speed of Light and Sound"! After a 5-10 minute ceremony of "What in the heck did he say?" exercise, Christine finally reached deep within her mind to say, "The speed of sound is 1100 feet per second, and the speed of Light is 186,000 miles per second! The Speed of Sound is like a snail's crawl to the Speed of Light. It takes light 8.33 minutes to reach us from the sun, which is 93,000,000 miles from Earth! It would take Sound a lifetime to reach us."

I tried to stop the students from telling me most of what I had been lecturing them on!  They could see Easter outfits sailing out of sight....... with the Speed of Light!

 I happily spent $150 on outfits that were on sale! Ne-Ne got 2 outfits and a toy: Shalay, Ebony and Christine got the dreams of their hearts! I got a glimpse of the future, as I knew Christine was on the way to removing each and every one of the "F" grades   (click) she had received at her Charter School in West Los Angeles! My "outfit" will consist of my "Usual Usher Suit", as I lead worshippers into New Philadelphia A.M.E. Church (click) for Easter Services!

Radar and the Doppler effect (C.J. Doppler)

The apparent change in wavelength of sound or light caused by the motion of the source, observer or both. Waves emitted by a moving object as received by an observer will be blueshifted (compressed) if approaching, redshifted (elongated) if receding. It occurs both in sound and light. How much the frequency changes depends on how fast the object is moving toward or away from the receiver. Compare cosmological redshift.
