3:00 PM  Eddie Gayle picked up Tonesha from King Drew Magnet School in South Los Angeles. Eddie Gayle is the wife of Cleophas Mike McAlpin, and usually assists in picking up students from various schools and bringing them to this tutoring location. Many thanks to Eddie Gayle for more than 8 years of voluntary service in this endeavor.

Tonesha and I went to work after she had taken a short break. I had prepared notebooks for her that will serve as work books for various subjects. One was for Biology; another for Chemistry; another for Algebra 2; another for History and another for English. There was no folder for Physical Education.

This afternoon, the focus was on Chemistry. Last afternoon, it was on Biology. I was elated to know that both subjects were concerned with some of the same topics....one being the Elements. I took Tonesha into the Internet at www.webelements.com  and printed out a copy of the Table (see PDF document at Link above) that she placed into her Chemistry notebook. We also looked at the "Poster of Elements" at the Link above and we printed out a copy of that one also.

In preparation for doing many reports, some of which teachers may or may not accept as extra-credit work, I taught her something about the inner working of Adobe PhotoShop 7.0 and PrintShop (Two sophisticated Photo Editing and Document Software). It is my intent to move right along in her Chemistry book (that she took out and turned to 1.1) as well as the Biology book of the day before.

We then went through each section, from 1.1 through 1.6,  in the Chemistry textbook (Addison -Wesley Chemistry, Expanded Fourth Edition), with Tonesha taking notes as I lectured on such things as electron configurations, especially that of the "life element, Carbon" I used poker chips to demonstrate how Carbon bonds with itself and other elements..

Being a Chemical Engineering Major at the University of Illinois at Chicago back in the day, and after having made very good grades in Semi-Micro-Qualitative Analysis and Quantitative Analysis, I was elated to be back in the presence of the Elements again! One must remember that back in 1954-55, there were no calculators, electronic scales or any other sophisticated and ultra-modern tools of today's Chemist: There was the "Scale Balance" and the Slide Rule! I could have sworn that someone was breathing too heavily (depositing all kinds of water, germs and the like) on my "unknown- samples- that- needed- identification" as I meticulously counted the to and fro swings of the scale balance, and carefully input weights into my Chemistry Notebook for the class. Miraculously, I passed that class with less than flying colors, and then it was on to the more sophisticated....Quantitative Chemistry and Organic Chemistry! Somewhere along the way, between the German Language, the Calculus and the Physics, I decided I did not desire to be a Chemist and switched to Electrical Engineering instead...(with a stint at Civil Engineering also). And wouldn't you just know it...The University of California at Los Angeles greeted me with the Atomic Structure of Matter as my very first class!  I found Electrical Engineering to be to my liking, as it combined Chemistry, Physics, Calculus and Biology into a neat little packet that I could dine upon...on the road to becoming a Senior Supervising Electrical Tester for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power for over 28 years! There I was, writing examinations for the new- hires, teaching Electrical Engineers what they needed to know with regards to Electrical Metering of all of the Power used by Los Angeles residents and businesses, San Pedro residents....from San Pedro to Bishop, California...and keeping all of the meters accurate and registering properly, even that of King Drew Magnet School at 120th and Wilmington, if that falls under the Power Grid of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power! Working with Chemistry students in High School is extremely gratifying for me......I would pay Tonesha for allowing me to assist her...as she removes each and every one of her bad grades.....to be replaced with good ones!

These Lesson Reviews will now switch to a "Tonesha Series", with the next page. Webmasters have that privilege!

My wife and I took Tonesha out to one of our favorite restaurants on November 22nd (Wednesday at 6:45) after our tutoring session. The place is called R & J Soul Food: Toneha, Eddie Gayle and I enjoyed our fish meal...as well as lively conversation with Julie, the restaurant Owner. Julie is one of our financial supporters, and I urge all to visit this fine restaurant at Lakewood and Downey.  (562) 408-2960. Tonesha's birthday is upcoming and this meal was in  order, as well as the gift of silver that she received from us. We then took her to her home and talked to her very cheerful mother!

Tonesha's attitude about learning motivates me to go to the limit in assisting her. Her mother has the proper attitude, and so does the Professional Community that stands to assist her. All in all, this is a winning combination that God has assembled to reverse the failing grades of this talented student. We will allow God to Order our Steps!
