6, 2006
Thursday: November 2, 2006 ... Saturday November 4, 2006 Monday November 6, 2006
Tyneesha (13) has been turning in Science Reports to her teacher at Curtiss Middle School. The first was on Newton's Three Laws of Motion. She did a great job and said her teacher was very pleased.
Since Tyneesha said no homework was due, I took her into Science again; This time my lecture was on several facets of Science, with particular emphasis on Mechanical Advantage. First, I discussed the "lever principle", since we had ventured to the Los Angeles Science Center a few months ago and raised an SUV with this "lever principle". This Scientific principle can be engaged in front of the Science Center. Kids of all ages pull on the rope that is attached to one end of a "see-saw", and marvel that they are able to lift the huge SUV! Tyneesha now knows that the pivot point is most important to this concept; The distance from the pivot point to the objects on both ends of the "see-saw" and the weight of the objects, being the concept that allows one to lift huge objects.
distance (1) x weight (1) = Distance (2) x weight (2).......Tyneesha understood that the farther she was away from a pivot point, the more weight she could lift! It didn't take her long to say "Oh, I see!"
Next, we went into "A Pulley System", with the Mechanical Advantage increased with the number of times a rope passes over several pulleys. Tyneesha grasped this concept right away. I told her she could lift the SUV in this way also.
Next, I switched to "Temperature" and the conversion from the Centigrade scale to the Fahrenheit scale. I scanned her Science work book and came up with this one. I told her she would be doing a PrintShop document on this bit of lesson and she said, "I won't get extra-credit for any work I turn in": To which I said, "Who cares?"
We spent a lot of time converting from one scale to the other. We used C = 5/9 (F - 32) Tyneesha said it felt like 80 degrees outside and we inserted 77º Fahrenheit into the formula. The result was C = 5/9 ( 45), which led to 25º Centigrade. Tyneesha beamed when she viewed the dual temperature scale to read what she had just calculated!
We took to the Sony CyberShot digital camera and took a picture of a small dual thermometer. On one side was the Fahrenheit and on the other was the Centigrade scales. Tyneesha cropped the photo in Adobe 7.0 and pasted it into her report.

Tonesha will rise to the top!
Tonesha (15) of King Drew Magnet School: We reviewed basic algebra concerned with coordinate axes, and then we graphed straight lines...for more than 3 hours! Kaelah (15) and Tonesha worked from the Algebra Two textbook and I am sure they will do very well when it comes to solving two equations to find a crossing point.....the solution to the equations....by using the Substitution Method, the Graphing Method and the Elimination Method.
Janae (17) and I reviewed basic geometrical figures for an upcoming High School Exit Examination. We discussed circles, rectangles, triangles, and trapezoids....their areas, and all that is required to know of them.

Karesha (15) "I am now an "A" student at Gardena High. All students must pass the High School Exit Exam in order to graduate from high school!" Karesha has a relative (15) at King Drew who will be joining us...her name is Shakkia (excuse spelling)
It was finally time to attend the birthday celebration of our star C.A.M.S. student, Kahmya...her 16th (click)
Monday November 6, 2006........... 6 students from 6 different schools!
Students in attendance: Gynaa, New students (17) Luzinger High school; Courtney (15) Mayfair High school, Asia (13) Mayfair Middle school, Katelynn (15) Bellflower High school, Devin (16) Carson High school, Donald (16) Eagle Continuation school
Interaction with a Professional: Patrice, mother to Gynaa, came to pick her up. I asked for an overview of her career: to which she gave detailed information as to her job title, the qualifications for becoming a Credit Union Supervisor, and what it takes to become a worker in a Financial Institution. Previous to the interaction with a Professional, we did various facets of learning. It was a very intense afternoon of learning from 4:00 PM until 7:30 PM.
The students gave self introductions, and each told of their classes and homework assignments from their various schools. Courtney was told of my interaction with Mrs. Brown, her English Teacher, on TeacherWeb, and via e-mail. She began her homework assignment on "Outsiders" and a descriptive song that relates to this story or some part of it. Courtney went into the Internet and did this assignment. Her mother came to pick her up around 7:00PM, and we discussed her English homework (her mother checked the document she had written on "Outsiders"). I was shown Courtney's progress report; Her mother said she had spoken to each of Courtney's teachers except one, Ms. Sfiligoi (Earth Science Teacher). She said this Science teacher had not called to communicate with her. This is a further appeal: Ms. Sfiligoi, could you please call Courtney's mother? I have been given permission to come and sit in each of Courtney's classes and to speak to each of Courtney's teachers. I do not have the time to visit the classrooms of the 18 students now enrolled in A Free Tutoring Service, and would prefer to communicate via E-mail after entering Teacherweb.com. I will do this at the end of this Lesson Review! I also instructed Asia to give me the names of her teachers at Mayfair Middle school. Some teachers do not have a teacher website: those teachers at various schools will most certainly receive a visit from me, or a part of my staff of Doctors, Attorneys, etc....who assist me, over the coming weeks.
Katelynn did her homework related to Driver Education and I required her to list 20 rules for driving. I tested her on what she had learned from her Driver's Ed. book...Asia did her homework related to a book report, and I checked the document she had written in this regard in Microsoft Word. Courtney did her homework and then joined Devin, Donald and Gynaa as we did math related to the High School Exit examination. The work involved percents and decimals. Each of the students worked problem after problem in this regard. I allowed a break after one hour and then it was back to a very intense afternoon of learning!
Several telephone calls came in. One was from a new student, Tonesha, who asked me to pick her up from King Drew Magnet School on Tuesday. I told her I would. Tomorrow will be more of the same, with another 6-8 students....engaged in the business of learning.
I reminded the students that as a Supervising Senior Electrical Tester with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, I would be making no less than $100 per hour tutoring Electrical Engineers, Testers, and the like on all facets of mathematics related to electrical metering: computers that do just that, and safety precautions related to keeping oneself safe from........the flash of 34, 500 volts of electricity! I took my job of 28 years very serious, as it involved keeping oneself on "this side of Glory". I have that same intensity when it comes to keeping all students on the "other side of ignorance". I will forever work for free to elevate the grade point average of all students of all Races and Ethnicity! God bless our efforts!
"Economic Situation" might dictate a "level of learning"; especially when it comes to those who can ill-afford to buy a computer...with the abstract notion that they will be able to afford......high speed internet and the like! Please understand, Teachers, that all are not at the economic level you might presume! Simple telephone calls would do miracles in this regard!
Ms. Sfiligoi (Earth Science Teacher) TeacherWeb Information for Courtney's mother. Her computer is frozen at this time! Would you please call Courtney's mother to discuss her attitude, homework assignments and ways to improve her grade....thank you!11/06/06-
