Monday:  October 30, 2006

Students Present: Donald, Devin, Courtney, Asia, Katelynn...missing: Jordan...Attention Mrs. Brown, 9th grade Teacher of Mayfair High School in Lakewood (Courtney's English Teacher)

A Review took place of subjects taught during the previous week. It was "MY TIME" again, and I reviewed basic geometrical figures with all of the students. For circles, I chose our Solar System, with the radius from the Sun to the Planets as a take-off point. We calculated the circumference of the orbits of all of the Planets, as well as described each of the Planets: All of the students had to remember all of the Planets and the saying that we do to make it easier....My Very Excellent Mom Just Served Up Nachos! This is different from our previous saying because there are now 8 recognized Planets instead of nine! Goodbye Pluto as a Planet, according to the Powers that Be.....The Scientific Community!

Each of the Planets was described: From Mercury with a surface temperature hot enough to boil rock and metal, to Venus, the Morning Star...its brilliance attributed to a gaseous atmosphere...superheated by the closeness of the Sun...to glow with it green house effect gases...to forever be the 3rd brightest object in the sky, to Earth with its wonderful life- giving distance from the Sun, to Mars with its red and rocky surface, to Jupiter with its 4 moons of Ganymede, Europa, IO and Callisto...each marvelously different in surface features, to Saturn with its beautiful rings, to Uranus with its maximum distance from the Sun and of the greatest radius and the longest year and the greatest circumference......C = 2 R.  Circumference and area of circles were reviewed: as well as with areas of rectangles and triangles; then it was on to the Pythagorean Theorem of right triangles, with emphasis on the special right triangle of 30 degrees....C = A ²   + B ²   was discussed briefly and was told of its relevance to the high school exit examination as well as the SAT and other examinations.

Devin, Donald and I discussed Newton's Three Laws of Motion, as I had done last week with all of the other students. Examples were given of each Law, and I am afraid that I opened up a level of intensity in this regard that saw the students happily talking about space travel and the "whys" of why an elephant and a feather should drop at the same acceleration of 32.2 feet/second/second...in a vacuum!

We discussed homework assignments: Asia's dealt with Biology and definitions of terms related to Biology. I had Devin and Donald write on the dry erase board, the terms read out loud by Asia. Such terms as Cell Membrane, Cell Wall, Mitochondria, Vacuole, Nucleus.......were discussed. Asia made flash cards and began to remember all of the Biology homework.

Katelynn's homework consisted of percentage and decimal to percentage conversions. Donald and Devin had to work along with this basic math... along with Katelynn and myself. It was on to a review of percents and decimals, exponents and the manipulation of same with the young men. There was little time to do anything else but study and do more studying on this intense afternoon of tutoring. The students were reminded that this level of tutoring would continue....and continue....with threats of "suspension" ringing in ears...if discipline becomes a problem. ( I rarely is... with any of the 14 students enrolled!)

Courtney was warned about her grade (low) in English and told to give up television by her mother. She was instructed to read her assigned book (Outsiders) and to make a report to me on her progress on Wednesday. Please let me know how she does on your upcoming examination related to the book.  Courtney presented a schedule of math from her teacher, and of Science.  Mrs. Brown...English 9 and 12.... I'm happy to communicate via   www.teacherweb.com click!

To the Parents: Below is Mrs. Brown's assignment in English that appears on TeacherWeb. Please give me all of your  teacher's names and a correct spelling of schools so that I can communicate with the teachers and so can you!

For Courtney's mother

Week of October 30th

**Read Book Report Book for 30 minutes nightly. Book Report letters are due a

Monday: Pick a song that thematically relates to The Outsiders.
(Song Analysis project due Thursday). TBA in class Tuesday.

not turn the book in yet!

The students worked for one and one-half hours. The worked very hard....and so did I.....and it was all, and will always be....for free. With Shalay's grades now moving to all "A" at King Drew Magnet School: with Omatseyin grades moving to a high GPA at Westchester High: with Tyneesha moving her grades from all "F" to all "A" at Curtiss Middle School: With Devin and Donald replacing all of the "F" grades with better ones....and with each and every one of the students of...A Free Tutoring Service working extremely hard, I am sure that God is smiling down on us to Order Each and Every One of Our Steps. He has given us the drive and determination to work our fingers to the bone to assist our youth with their education.

Teachers: Do you have a www.teacherweb.com  site? If not, could you please send me an e-mail to cleophas9@sbcglobal.net  and let me know of your class curriculum, especially with regards to text book assignments? I would be happy to assist you in making sure that all homework is done and turned in, and each and every instance of discipline dealt with!

As usual, and after taking care of business matters all day (some involved with Student-Court cases), I retired after the students had left at around 7:30 PM... and awoke at this morning hour of 2:00AM to input some of the lessons taught into this website. As usual, I have said my prayers. I pray that all of the troubles, legal or otherwise,  that face some of my students will be solved by God.....Amen
