Lesson Review for this Session on Thursday January 16, 2010...as well as a brief review of sessions on this past Tuesday and Saturday.
Ronald was beginning to get the message. "I am not playing with you", as I smashed my wooden yard stick against a chair, shattering it. I was used to smashing my plastic ruler, but not the wooden one I had purchased from Home Depot to do repair work, and eventually use it to teach the students...fractions. Oh course, it made a racket that shocked me, and I gathered up the pieces on the floor and wondered if it could be repaired. Ronald seemed to be in an "unbelieving position", as he gathered himself to determine his next move. Would he ask to be dismissed, or would he get the message, "you must eliminate each and every one of those darned F grades and replace all of them with A grades"?
I told Ronald to get his books out, to which he said he had forgot to bring them. That caused the ruler to suffer another stroke against the same chair. This time, none of it broke. Ronald decided he'd better get busy, and quickly found a sheet of paper and pencil....and sat down.
The two other students smiled as if to say, "Good for you! If we have to bring our butts over here on the Blue Line and study, then who are you to come over here, with no books, and think you are not going to do anything?" I knew Ronald has done an "attitude adjustment" when he asked me to help him with some Algebra work he had miraculously....remembered!
And we worked Algebra problems found in one of my many Algebra books. And we discussed American History right after the Revolutionary War.
Ronald came over the next Tuesday, where discussed graphing straight lines. This time, he came with his grand mother, Sandra, as she became a part of his march to the top. She said she would be involved.
Extra Credit Work for Ronald......February 2, 2010.
Ronald is an expert at graphing lines, and so
I took him a step further. Two lines are perpendicular when their slopes
are reciprocal and of opposite signs.....for example...Line #1
Y= 2/3 x - 10 Line # 2 Y = -3/2 x +
8....these lines are perpendicular....Try graphing them to find out this is
true! When two lines have the same slope, they are parallel.
For the equation.....Y = X....we can use the Pythagorean Theorem to find that
these lines make an angle of 45 degrees at the vertex. Ronald and I
reviewed:
C ² = a ² + b ²
This is going beyond Ronald's class, but as long as he is up to it, we will go on and on!
We discussed Louis and Clark's Expedition and went to Wikepedia to print out a map of their explorations. We reviewed the Louisiana Purchase and referred King Louis to the looney bin for selling all of that land for a few millions (15) What was he thinking about? Ronald's interest matched mine, as we went deeper in his History....with both of laughing at King Louie.
We wrote poetry for English Class.....but the poem was too short.....Not too bad, as I showed Ronald.....Rymezone..and the ease of writing poetry with this tool. I believe Ronald is well on his way .... his manner exhibits the trait of an A-maker!
