December 8, 2005   Lesson Review E-35........Dedicated also to Ms.Woodlief of Drew Magnet School: a caring math teacher! Building up steam! A Free Tutoring Service " is on the move!" Students from Drew Magnet School and around the Los Angeles basin work very hard on homework assignments on this, the afternoon of December 8, 2005, from 2:30 PM until 9:00 PM.

Students: a few of many...7 years and counting!: from left to right (bottom row)...Jamise of A.I.U. University in West Los Angeles; Shalay of Dodson Middle-Magnet School in Rancho Palos Verdes; Kaylan of Compton; (top row)...Jarrell of Los Angeles Trade Technical College; Cleasena of Long Beach City College; Alex of Drew Magnet School; Loren of Drew Magnet School; Chelsea of Drew Magnet School. Not present...Robert of Drew Magnet School; Katie of Drew Magnet School; Ke' Ontra of Banning High School. Our Website is  www.weteachfree.com , The diary of a miraculous nonprofit Corporation. Please view our past history (7-years) to see all of the students that have come our way....many, many, many from Drew Magnet School!

What better joy could be found! It gave me a thrill to have a group of students so dedicated to learning as the group that attended our tutoring session on this afternoon. Cleophas Mike McAlpin...Executive Director.  See a bit of my  frustration....in the past1

We covered everything! We graphed straight lines with ease; we worked problems in Algebra Two that dealt with matrix analysis. We worked word problems involving two unknowns. We did right triangles; sines and cosines and tangents. We had a brief review of basic fractions. We worked feverously on remembering the first 16 Presidents of the United States. How did it all begin?

Aubry: I picked up Shalay (13) from Dodson Middle School in Rancho Palos Verdes at 1:30 PM. I took her to see my brother's multi-million dollar home that sits high up on the Rancho Palos Verdes peninsula. My brother, Aubry, is one of the Volunteer Tutors in our Organization. He retired from the United States Air Force as a full Colonel and upon retirement, accepted a job as one of the Vice Presidents of Logicon, a giant in Military armament. Aubry, of course, is a millionaire and he is always willing to share his great personality and his trek through colleges and universities with the students.

Shalay was quite impressed with the 180 degree view out on the back yard. Catalina Island loomed in the background, with Aubry's beautiful swimming pool and jacuzzi in the foreground; with many ships making their way out of San Pedro towards the open ocean. Aubry, of course, of great work ethic, was busily working on the roof when we arrived. He came down to greet Shalay and to give her a warm hug. Aubry encouraged Shalay to keep up the good work in school and congratulated her on joining Church the two weeks previous. Shalay beamed!

One of our goals is to introduce the students to the Professional Community. Had Aubry's wife, Pat, not been at work supervising the purchase of Global Positioning Satellites for the United States government, she would have been happy to discuss the 4000-6000 employees' supervisory job she held, as one of the top paid Black women in government! It gave me a thrill to have Shalay interact with this very, very successful couple.

Shalay and I engaged in the study of Algebra One upon our arrival at Dominguez Hills. I reviewed her on a geometry problem that Ke'Ontra and I had studied last Tuesday. Given an equilateral triangle with altitude of 9 inches, what is the area of the triangle? See Previous Page  for Ke'ontra's introduction to right triangles and how to solve this problem by using the cosine of an angle.

Shalay and I worked many word problems in Algebra One. Then, she went into the Internet to complete her science and history homework. Shalay is well on her way in raising her grade point average to a 3.5 to 4.0. She will move her "C of D" grade in Algebra One to an "A" grade within a few weeks! Again, that is another one of our goals: to increase grade point averages. Shalay will also improve her grade in Science.

Alex arrived to begin his homework in Algebra Two. I reviewed Alex on basic fractions because that was all her needed to solve his matrix problems. I also reviewed him on Algebra word problems and the geometry of the previous two sessions. I assisted with several of his Matrix problems and then he was off to the races! Alex let me know that he had raised his "F" grade to a "C" or "D" grade during the week that he had been coming to the Free Tutoring Service. It is for sure that his grade will move to an "A" or "B" grade with a few weeks!

Chelsea and Loren were next to arrive and receive homework assistance in Algebra One. They were soon on their way to graphing straight lines within a matter of seconds!

Alex asked the question, "Will I be taking field trips with the group soon"? I told him, "As soon as you are doing good in school, we will be taking many field trips". That is another one of our goals: To take educational and entertainment field trips... from one end of these United States to the other! See Field Trips, on the Home Page. I took Cleasena to her home in Lynwood (9:45 PM). I was tired but very well pleased.

Thank you, Mrs. Stretch and the parents of Loren for your tax deductible donation of $75 each. You have made it possible to finally build another super computer! It will be more than 3.0 gigahertz in speed, more than 300 gigabytes in memory and contain more software than the LA Library...almost. It will contain many, many professional tools to allow our students a crack at a successful career. Yes, we (the students and I) will build our own computer, as we have done in the past. That is another one of our goals....to teach vocational skills. Skills in Surveying, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Testing, Computers, Secretarial skills, to name a few, are in our future. Some of our students, with our assistance,  have already taken  civil service examinations in some of these fields. As you can see, we are an open nonprofit Corporation, financially or otherwise...We all work for free!

It is indeed gratifying to teach all that I know, work 'til I drop...for the cause of Christ. He orders each and every one of my steps! We simply cannot fail! It has been 7 years of free tutoring....and counting!
