Lesson Review D- 26: Valuable Links

November 17-21, 2003

Parents..Front and Center! Over 70 % of our students are from the City of Carson (See Below). We need to speak to parents!

Monday, November 17th  4:00 PM to 8:30PM ...     November 18th (below)

Students in attendance....Christopher, Kecia, Quiana, Cassondra, Jarrell, Ashley

Cassondra and Quiana received an Internet Lesson on the Periodic Table of the Elements. We used the Internet Link, "valuable links"  Valuable Links  above to enter www.webelements.com .

I took the students through a whirlwind tour of the Elements. We discussed electronic configurations and the number of electrons in each group of elements. We discussed the methods by which atoms combine with each other to form molecules. We discussed the Table in detail: paying particular attention the homework given to each student. I am sure the students attained 4 hours of schoolwork in less than 20-minutes!

I would advise each and every chemistry student to go the Internet Site and review the Periodic Table of the Elements. It is a very valuable learning tool.

I assisted Quiana with her homework in chemistry. It dealt with "units conversion": transferring moles to grams in compounds and vice versa: writing empirical formulas.

I also assisted Quiana with the graphing of straight lines. This is "old hat" for us now and the students are taught to do straight line equations in less than one minute. They are taught how to manipulate the straight line equation to find slope, y intercept and how to graph a line in less time than that!

I checked Chistopher's homework from Stephen White Middle School.

Ashley worked on the computer to complete a biology assignment. Kecia assisted her.

November 18th...Tuesday      4:00 PM....8:30PM

Students in attendance....Ke' Ontra, Ashley, Ashlyn, Jarrell, Cassondra, James, Kelan

Homework assistance: Cassondra

Cassondra and I worked to solve a system of linear equations by graphing.

First: Graph each line and find the point of intersection, if there is one (lines with the same slope are parallel, and hence do not cross each other).

Second: Place the point of intersection into the original straight line equations and check for equality. If there is equality for both equations, then you have the solution!

Each of the students showed their homework to me and I made an assessment of it along with them.

Parents take note! Kelan refused (upon being asked several times) to show what she was doing  and so is suspended until further notice. It must be understood that we are not a disciplinary establishment and will not tolerate insubordination from any student. Students who refuse to cooperate with us with regards to education have no place in the Tutoring Service. Some students only come over to socialize, and those students will be weeded out and asked to stay home and do their homework.

Parents must visit our Tutoring sessions upon occasion to monitor what goes on. They most oftentimes drop off their child and we never get a chance to speak to them about school performance, attitude and disciplinary problems, or anything!

Ashley reviewed her Biology project with me. James completed his Algebra homework. Cassondra completed her Algebra homework with regards to graphing lines and systems of equations.

Everything went as it should...in... "A Free Tutoring Service: Preparing for the Future".
