Announcement! We will be attending the L.A. Sparks Vs. Detroit WNBA basketball championship game on Friday afternoon. The discounted cost is only $10 for members and families of "The Free Tutoring Service". Please call me right away if you are interested in attending. (310) 635-4536) : Mr. McAlpin
September 9: Monday afternoon...Students in attendance: Cassondra, Kecia, Ryan, Jarrell, Christopher, Ke' Ontra, Phoenicia (visiting student), Quiana (new student). Six of the eight students are residents of Carson, California.
Quiana attends Carson High School and is a star basketball player for that High School varsity team. Quiana is also a star, although a new one, in the Free Tutoring Service. She worked one-on-one with me on Algebra 2, specifically "greater than, less than" absolute value equations and the graphing of same. Quiana will return on Tuesday, and then hopefully on Thursday to increase her knowledge of this section of Algebra 2. She was pointed to "Valuable Links" above as well as other sections of this website: Valuable Links connect to Internet Sites that assists us with Algebra, Geometry, Science and Languages. We also have many Algebra books, CD-ROM disks and handouts to assist us with our studies. Quiana's homework also dealt with "units conversion" and we reviewed how to convert from the English to the Metric System and vice-versa.
It is indeed a pleasure to tutor such an intense student as Quiana. I am sure that her enthusiasm in the Tutoring Service matches her "power forward" play for her Carson High School basketball team!
Jarrell did another 9 pages of his Algebra 2 booklet from Pilgrim Christian School in Maywood, California.
Christopher showed me his homework in Algebra 1. He worked several problems in his head. That shows he is well on his way at Stephen White Middle School. Christopher is very adamant about making all "A" grades in school this semester. He is studying as if he believes he can do just that!
Cassondra and I worked one-on-one with Algebra 2 word problems. She was reminded to simply let "x" represent the unknown quantity in an equation and it becomes a simple matter to write an equation that involves unknowns. We worked at least 5 word problems together. Cassondra absorbed all and did several problems on her own.
Ryan wrote several Spanish words and phrases on our dry erase board. I added 12 more that dealt with "my face". We will be learning new vocabulary words on a weekly basis until we have acquired a good vocabulary of Spanish words and phrases. It is possible to make an "A" grade in Spanish utilizing the tools we have at our disposal. It has been done in the Tutoring Service before. We are constantly looking for someone to volunteer their services and assist us with our Spanish lessons.
Kecia did her homework. She reminded me that she was also a star basketball player. I truly believe her!
I am afraid that some new students will become intimidated by our intensity and dedication to learning while in the Tutoring Service. We adhere to strict discipline! We are definitely not for any student who exhibits disciplinary problems. We are only interested in learning at this time and not inclined to waste time on discipline.
Please do not plan on becoming, or remaining a part of this program if you have discipline problems. We are not for everyone!
