And now, it's
Zero Tolerance!
An Editorial (For activities occurring on
this Wednesday afternoon, go to next page)
As each student entered our Tutoring headquarters, he or she was asked to look at the dry erase board. Each student read the words, " Zero Tolerance" scribbled on the board. Each student gave the correct definition of that phrase, and then I proceeded to tell each and every one of them that it is now time for......zero tolerance. Any student not doing exactly as I say in regards to education would be eliminated from this Free Tutoring Service.
It is now time to "purge the system" of those students who come over with their disruptive behavior and cause turmoil and destruction to everything that we are trying to accomplish. Some students have already been suspended this week, and I am afraid more are soon to join them. Some students did not take to well with this ultimatum and said, "this is my last tutoring day over here". I said, "that's fine with me. You will now be replaced with others who really want and need to be here"!
No one wants to "air out" dirty laundry with regards to home. No one wants to let the world know about bad behavior and the need to correct it. Everyone wants to hear everything about the good and nothing about the bad. I must apologize for the bad, but tell everyone about it. This is a diary and it does contain some of the bad and some of the good. It is meant to be an honest diary. All one has to do is read the "Editorials" that have a link on the Home Page. Since the word is not getting out with regards to the bad, I must place it in "Lesson Reviews" with the hope that parents and students will read something about what we feel when we are trying our best to assist with the education of our youth, and we are catching hell from students, parents and teachers!
Thank God for "Progress Reports" from schools. They should occur on a weekly basis for some students. Then parents would really know what is happening on a weekly basis and not wait until a "six-week progress report" to scream and yell at a failing student! Then parents would not come over to this Tutoring Service and ask "What is happening over here that causes my child to fail?" Parents should point the finger at themselves, because they are really to blame for allowing the child to get away with too much when it comes to education. They should demand that the child study for at least 3-4 hours each and every afternoon after school. They should cancel all extracurricular activities of a failing student. They should visit the schools and sit in on classes. They should be totally involved in the education of their children and not expect a miracle to occur in the lives of their children when they have had disciplinary problems and an unwillingness to learn. They should not expect us to deal with the disciplinary student who is failing! They should come over to the Tutoring Service on a regular basis, as well as to schools, and sit in for a while. They should not expect some miracle cure for a failing student who has been failing for some time, without stepping in to assist.
It is now time for "zero tolerance" when it comes to discipline and learning. Any student not engaging in homework activities will be eliminated from this Free Tutoring Service. Each and every minute spent in this environment will be productive.
The students really got the message! They engaged in homework. Several received an "X" on the dry erase board for talking out of turn and not doing what was supposed to be done in this environment. "Three X's" means suspension! For good! This is now a "zero tolerance" environment, and any new student who desires admission will understand why they are in this environment.
