Tutoring Activities: School Visitations...
I visited Banning High School and sat in the classrooms of two of the students in the Tutoring Service. Jarrell's History class was interesting. The topic covered was State Vs. the Federal Government in the early formation of our Country. The teacher welcomed me into the classroom and I sat and took notes like the other 40- 11th graders.
I then went to Glen's Chemistry class and spoke to his teacher. We conferred about a Science project that was due. It dealt with "cell structure".
I then accompanied Glen to his Algebra One class. I was not treated very well by the teacher. She told me that I should be productive and not sit in her class and stare at my student? Her attitude drew another one of my editorials. You can read it under "Editorials" and the Home Page.
I picked up Glen at 1:30 PM as today was a "short day." I had a counseling session with Glen as we rode to Lynwood to pick up Cleasena. I had Glen to tell me something about each of his classes and the subject matter covered in each. I cautioned him about not doing his very best because doing less than I required would get him booted out of the Tutoring Service. He is now "hooked" on the Tutoring Service, and would rather do anything but leave it!
I visited several of our business supporters and they made small monetary contributions to our Service. I thank each and every one of them for assisting us. They understand how much it must cost to carry on such a service as this, and they come through each and every time.
I took Cleasena to dinner at Thai Barbecue in Carson. There was a two-fold purpose in going. The first reason was to discuss Cleasena's work progress at Lynwood High, and the second was to speak to June, a Thiamese young lady of 22, about tutoring the students on the upcoming Sunday afternoon. June is going to Cal State Long Beach to obtain her Master's Degree in Structural Engineering Design and I had asked her previously to come over and tell of her school curriculum. June promised that she would and so I sought to solidify my plans of having her come over to tutor the students. She smiled and said that she would come over this Sunday!
I had several telephone calls to answer when I returned home. There were 4 more students desiring admission into our Tutoring Service. I can not say "no" to any of them, although our numbers are swelling by the hour!
