LESSON REVIEW # 6B... November will be... "A Month of Examinations"... To Erica Browne...U.C. Berkeley Pre-Med Student / Volunteer Tutor
Cleophas "Mike" McAlpin......Tutor
Date: November 1-2, 2000 "Test your 8th Grader!"
Sheena..Having
a good time doing homework!
The following statements and examination are taken from a Los Angeles County Office of Education document: (Who are they kidding?) Please follow our 8th graders (tutoring students) along with an examination called: "Assessment For The California Mathematics Standards...Grade 7"
According to Los Angeles County.....Grade seven: "By the end of grade seven, students are adept at manipulating numbers and equations and understand the general principles at work. Students understand and use factoring of numerators and denominators and properties of exponents. They know the Pythagorean theorem and solve problems in which they compute the length of an unknown side. Students know how to compute the surface area and volume of basic three dimensional objects and understand how area and volume change with a change in scale. Students make conversions between different units of measurement. They know and use different representations of fractional numbers (fractions, decimals, and percents) and are proficient at changing from one to another. They increase their facility with ratio and proportion, compute percents of increase and decrease, and compute simple and compound interest. They graph linear functions and understand the idea of slope and its relation to ratio."
Ms. Woodlief, a dedicated and wonderful Drew Magnet School 9th grade Mathematics teacher, made an announcement (I was told) to her class that all of the students should call on our "Free Tutoring Service (310) 635-4536" for assistance. She probably knows of our dedication and intensity.
I am sure that she knows, as well as I, that there is definitely a need to strengthen the knowledge of mathematics and science...before the 9th grade.
Jeremiah and James, our 8th grade tutoring students, are working on the sample Los Angeles County Examination below: (See Lesson Review 16 for hyperlink to examination)

Stay Tuned: 32 more exam pages to follow!....Can your 8th grader pass this sample 7th grade California Assessment Examination?
James and Jeremiah, 8th graders, worked through the pages above, with a mild degree of difficulty. (please send e-mail for copy of complete examination)
Students in attendance: Asia, Sheena, Cleasena, Deandre, Jarrell, James, Jeremiah, Jarrell.
Activities: 1. Homework help (Asia) with solving 9th grade Algebra equations. (Drew Magnet School)
2. Review of examination above with James and Jeremiah.
3. Homework help (Jarrell) on vocabulary (Banning H.S.)
4. Begin interactive CD-ROM disk # 1 on Spanish Language (4 - CD-ROM disks in all)
Tutoring ended 8:00PM. Next Tutoring Day...Thursday.
Lesson Review: Thursday
Thursday November 2, 2000...3:30 PM to 8:00 PM
James, Jarrell and I completed the first ten pages (approximately 100 questions and problems) of the sample State examination in approximately 30 minutes! The pace was fast and furious. I am now reassured that these students have learned all of the subject matter that is listed in the statement above. James and Jarrell will review the complete examination (40 pages) with all of the remaining students.
Tutoring ended: 8:00 PM
Field trip Saturday (November 4) to Griffith Observatory for classes in Physics and Astronomy: Foucault pendulum, Periodic Table of Elements, Galaxies, Space Stations and Satellites. See hyperlinks to Periodic Table, Physics and Satellites at Lesson review 16.
Additionally, the students will be taken to a military surplus store in Gardena (their request). Afterwards, they will be taken to either Universal City Walk, bowling, and or to the movies. It is their choice and they will pay their own way. I will take them and pay for the transportation.
Students slated to go thus far:
Jarrell, James, Jeremiah, Asia, Deandre, Sheena, Jarrett, Cleasena, Keyotta, Joshua, Jacob.
Related Activities:
The students and I have upgraded and programmed 5 Pentium computers (installed and formatted hard drives, installed modems, CD-ROM drives, sound cards, software) for a local Carson church (Lesson Review 17A ). They have assisted in setting up a website for the church. (The site is now online!). They will edit the site along with me, inputting documents and photos. Our Volunteer Tutors and Computer Programmers, Orlando and Rita Alexis, are Webmasters and are overseeing the training of our students so that they too, can become Webmasters. We will continue our lessons in Electronic and Electrical technologies ( By Cleophas McAlpin, Electrical-Electronics Supervisor, Retired).
(Note: Tutoring will take place on Monday (November 6th, 3:30 PM-8:00PM), Friday (November 10th) and Saturday (November 11th). No tutoring on November 7,8,9. Tutor will be out of town.)
We can't do it all, but we do what we can! Please assist us in any way that you can. God is still...ordering all of our steps. We all work for free!....2 years and counting!
