                                  A Presentation by the Students

There were approximately 20 parents and Professionals (these Professionals are called "Volunteer Tutors" because of lectures to the students and their educational interaction with them) in attendance. There was Medical Doctor Cheryl Browne (Carson Resident) of Kaiser Hospital; Jim Dear, a Middle School teacher; Officer Karriem, a Los Angeles Police Officer and another of our Volunteer Tutors; Annie Clayton of Carson, an Author; Marci Williams, a Los Angeles Schoolteacher and Volunteer Tutor; Chudi Ojei of Carson, a LAUSD Accountant and Volunteer Tutor; Carl Cammon, A Waste Management Company Executive; Andrew Williams, a Parks and Recreations Director. I, of course, I am not considered a professional, having retired as a Senior Supervising Electrical Tester with the Department of Water and Power in the City of Los Angeles. Of course, I taught many an electrical engineer, as well as many an electrical tester, on how not to become casualty of electrical power. I have had mega-college courses along those lines, as well as engineering courses and liberal studies courses, from many, many colleges and universities. Some of the parents: Angela, Mike, Debbie, Peggie, Chay of Carson, Paula of Carson, Ken, Vanessa, Harvey, Margaret and Marie.

To Our  Supporters, MC and Hattie Weathers:

School teacher Mr. Jim Dear of Stephen White Middle School in Carson (see our video presentation of this event; Mr.Jim Dear of Stephen White Middle School in Carson speaks on education, along with other Professionals) .

The students were given loud ovations as they went about their academic achievements.  They paid strict attention to the lecture from our guest speaker, Officer Karriem. Officer Karriem invited the group to visit his Southwest Division Police Station again (2 previous trips). Mrs. Clayton told the group how to publish a book and gave pointers on how to write. Mr. McAlpin, Chief Tutor,  said that each minute of tutoring was like putting money into an "educational bank." Doctor Browne told the students to do their very best in the upcoming school semester.

We are not boasting, but we must tell of the outstanding program that was put on by the students of "A Free Tutoring Service".  We must tell of the wonderful Sunday afternoon display of academic and vocational prowess on the part of the 14 students in attendance. There was Jarrell (13 of Dominguez Hills), Jeremiah (12 of Compton), Jarrett (12 of Inglewood), James (12 of Downey), Kenneth (11 of Los Angeles), Cole (14 of Carson), Shane (16 of Carson), Sheena (14 of Torrance), Cleasena (14 of Lynwood), Treyci (12 of Carson), Lauren (12 of Carson), Keyotta (15 of Los Angeles), Joshua (12 of Compton) and Amber (14 of Los Angeles).

Shavonn (15 of Bellflower), Kimberly (15 of Downey), Michael (13 of Downey) and Shamus (13 of Torrance), could not make it.

The Lesson Review # 5A on this website describes the program in its entirety. The program was a huge success.

The Spanish Language skit went very well. The students carried on a conversation (left), first in English, and then in Spanish. Kahmya (center), read all about our Volunteer Tutors. Lauren told all about our Curriculum, while Jarrell (right) told of our Educational Resources.

Jarrell proudly displayed an electric motor that he had constructed. It worked perfectly. He let everyone know that he had constructed it without the instruction sheet that came with the kit. Cleasena told of binary numbers and how to use the fingers to count in binary and then make a conversion to the decimal system. The students arranged themselves in teams and took apart an Apple Computer and then put it back together. They described each part as they removed it. The fastest time was 1 minute and 45 seconds! The students answered a barrage of questions and exercises from the Tutor, Mr. McAlpin. The questions covered all phases of mathematics, science, electronics and electricity. The students answered such questions as: Name all of the planets; Name the moons of Jupiter; Name some Constellations; Give distances from the sun and moon to the Earth; What is a light-year? What is the speed of light and sound and how many times could light travel around the earth in one second? What is y=mx + b? Graph several straight lines (time limit of one minute each); Use the Scientific Calculator to verify the graphs of straight lines; Do mixed fractions in multiplication and division; Describe some of the parts of the Human eye; What is the Electromagnetic Spectrum of Waves? What waves do we see and what waves do snakes see? Name all of the waves in the Spectrum; What is the Periodic Table of the Elements? Name the Noble gases; Name the Halogens; Give some of the uses of the Noble gases; Name as many elements you can in a minimum amount of time; What is the Electrolysis of Water? Tell how to break down water into its components; Go into the Internet and retrieve documents (a timed exercise); Use the CD-ROM disks and the Human anatomy and show parents; Tell of the CD-ROM disks that are contained in our Library; Describe each of our field trips; Find places on our World map ( maps were mounted on the wall). Find places on our map of California; Tell of our trip to New York and Washington D.C.; Tell of the many field trips to educational and entertainment places of interest.

The students were very proud to show off their skills to the many parents and Professionals that were in attendance. Cole (14) did the video taping but that did not stop the Tutor from asking him several questions and having him to do exercises in mathematics, which he did a good job of answering. The video tape is available for all who would like to see this wonderful occasion.

A delicious meal was served. It was a pot-luck affair. The parents, students and guests had a wonderful time of fellowshipping and dining. Problems relating to teenagers were discussed. Plans as relate to the future education of youth were discussed. It was wonderful display of Parents-Students-Professionals-Gathering and it was exactly as I, Cleophas McAlpin, had asked God to make possible. God answers prayers and I will continue to testify about his goodness.

All of the students were taken to New Philadelphia A. M.E. Church in Carson at 6:00 PM to a Youth Choir presentation. Some of our students are members of the Choir and they sang like professionals.

Our day ended at 10:00PM after Andrew had come over to pick up James, Jeremiah and James to take them home, and after I had taken Keyotta to Adams and Crenshaw to her home. It was truly a blessed day!

On Tuesday, August 29-31, 2000, several students will accompany Mr. McAlpin to Hoover Dam and Lake Meade. They will do a report on "Power Flow into the Los Angeles Basin". They will be visiting Las Vegas, also. This is the second trip to Hoover Dam and will involve some of the students who did not make the first trip.

We are not bragging, but we do think that we are the best thing that has come along in a long while that focuses on the education of our youth, and it is all free to everyone!
