"You students don't want to listen to my speech on motivation? You got two chances of getting out of it. Slim and none!"
Topics: A lecture on "Motivation"; Practice for our show on August 27,2000 ("Show Me What You've Got").
Our tutoring session for Sunday, August 20th began on Saturday. Jarrell journeyed to Anaheim with me to pick up computer software from one of our Tutors, Orlando Alexis, and I treated him to lunch afterwards. He received a 1 1/2 lecture on "motivation" after lunch. He absorbed all as we sat in front of his home in Lynwood.
Our Sunday session began at 1:00 PM. Many of the students attend church and I had picked up some of them earlier in the day to take them there: Keyotta and Charmaine (new student) from West Los Angeles; James from Downey and Jeremiah from Compton. Our lessons began after I had brought them, along with 3 others, to my house. We had a group discussion on "motivation" for approximately 1/2 hour.
I was surprised to learn that many of the students watched television for approximately 3 hours each school afternoon. I was surprised to learn that they talked on the telephone for 1 hour. I was surprised to learn that they had very little time to do additional homework, or read a book or listen to any other music except "rap" music.
My speech on motivation followed my questions about "free afternoon time". There is very little time to watch television shows all afternoon or to listen to rap music. I let all 10 of the students know that they were at the stage in life that they had to motivate themselves to excel. I pointed out all of the resources that they have at their fingertips to be anything that they chose to be. I suppose many were sorry that they had confessed to me about all of the wasted time in their lives.
Sheena: Two new students,
Charmaine and Sheena. Welcome to "A Free Tutoring
Service: Preparing for the Future."
Our Spanish Language Tutor, Marci Williams, wrote up a skit in Spanish. The students practiced the skit for approximately 1/2 hours. We practiced for our upcoming presentation for approximately 2 hours. The students had a lot of fun doing fractions, binary numbers and general science. They were very loud and enthusiastic about their learning and one would have thought that they were having a party on my front porch as they solved problem after problem. The upcoming program is shown below.

"I need a break."
"Do I have to listen to this lecture on electricity and computers? I ain't even got no lights in my doghouse. Why don't you let me go out and dig for a bone or something?"

"Oh dear me. I forgot where I hid my homework. I also forgot what homework I hid. I also forgot who gave me the stuff in the first place. I also forgot what I was supposed to tell you what you were supposed to remember about electricity. What is that stuff, anyway? Oh well, you know the stories they tell on us. pac...hy...pac...derm....pacyderms! *Thank you, Arthur and Sally Mays for your financial support."
