Lesson Plan for August 16, 2000 and subsequent Lesson Review...See Below
B. Other Resources......CD-ROM disks
We have approximately 200 CD disks on education. Everything related to math and science is at our disposal. Student are encourage to make full use of the CD library and most CD's are available for loan. A list of available CD's will be listed in the near future. The number increases daily.
We have many CD-ROM disks on Middle and High School subjects. We have S.A.T. and P.S.A.T. CD examination disks that will be utilized to help with examinations. We have the "Middle School Advantage" collection of disks and they are very comprehensive. We have disks on Government, Science, Mathematics, History, English, and many other Middle and High School subjects. We would love to have "animation disks".
2. Use of our Educational Tools.
a. The students will be acquainted with all of our tools on August 16, 2000. Most of the students already know of our tools, but there will be new students joining this Wednesday who must be shown the Internet and the CD-ROM resources. We will use Jarrell (13) and James (12) to teach them the Internet and how to surf it. Jarrell, James and Jeremiah (12) will serve as Assistant Tutors. Joshua (12), Cleasena (14), Asia (13), and Shamus (13) will review the CD-ROM disks on "Middle School Advantage."
b. Internet and CD-ROM Assignments: Go to: http://www.innerbody.com/htm/sysselec.html and print out the "Human Body Systems" home page. How many systems are available for study? Give a brief description of the Skeletal System and the Cardiovascular System. How many animations are available? What are they?
c. Go to: www.webelements.com and print out a Periodic Table of the Elements. Put your name on the copy because it will be used extensively during the upcoming school semester.
d. Load the CD-ROM disk on "History" into the computer and print out a document on the Civil War.
Lesson Review on assignment above....
August 17, 2000
It is very hard to say "no" when a student needs to be picked up and brought over for tutoring. Cleasena (14) called very early in the day and asked for transportation from Dana Middle School in San Pedro. Joshua needed transportation from Curtiss Middle School in Carson. Jeremiah needed transportation from Compton and Jarrell needed transportation from Lynwood. All of these students are from single-mother households and needed transportation to my home in Dominguez Hills. I picked up each one and brought them over. The time was approximately 1:00PM when we arrived at my home. We immediately went into our lesson for the day. (above).
Our trip over gave me ample time to engage the students in a conversation about "motivation". Cleasena and Joshua were congratulated on making straight "A"s on their report cards and told that they were finally "motivated" to do well in school. They would be required in the future to do many phases of homework on their own. We had the resources to help them to help themselves now. We had CD-ROM disks on various Middle and High School subjects; we had the Internet AOL@School (may no longer be up and running); we had many tutors who were willing to assist when help is needed. The students listened intently as we made the one hour trip over to my home. That was a far cry from the situation a short 6-months previous when I had to yell upon occasion to get them to turn off the "rap music" and listen to me. www.lightlink.com (may no longer be up and running!) is a better choice for entertainment.
James and Jeremiah took one of our "antique" Apple Computers that had a problem apart and instructed Cleasena and Joshua on how to disassemble and reassemble it. They told of the parts of a computer and identified each part. My lesson for the day would further strengthen their knowledge because our lesson dealt with the Middle School Advantage CD-ROM disk on "Principles of Science" (Computers, under the Index).
I found myself with a 1.44 MB floppy disk and a 100MB zip drive disk. I described the capacity of each and found that I had to venture into the meanings of "units" with regards to "mega, kilo, and nano and milli". We reviewed units again and concentrated on calculating how many 1.44 MB disks were needed to replace one 100MB disk. That led into the division of decimals numbers into whole numbers and a lot of review for some of the students who had forgot how to divide numbers such as 100 or 22 or simply 2 by a number such as 1.44 or 111.444, etc. We reviewed the procedure and I allowed no break until each of the students could do my examination problems in less than one minute. Calculators are ruining our students' ability to do basic arithmetical calculations and will not be allowed to solve them. We will use the Scientific Calculator, of course, but not to do division and multiplication problems. We will "take the time" to do our calculations, long-handed. Public Schools should do the same!
We next reviewed binary numbers for the benefit of those who missed the Sunday afternoon lecture. Cleasena is very good at binary numbers and was soon teaching others how to use the fingers of one hand to represent the decimal number of 31 (11111, binary = 31, decimal). Cleasena was so good, in fact, that she took to the writing board and would not give up the dry erase marker when I asked her to. Now that is what I mean by motivation! The students learned how to write their names in binary. They learned that computers are only interested in a "0" or a "1". They are super fast in making binary calculations!
We took to the computers and took to the CD-ROM disks. James went into our website and printed out the lesson plan above; Jarrell reviewed the disk on the Human Body; Joshua reviewed the disk on Mathblaster; Jeremiah reviewed the disk on History and Cole reviewed the disk on The Principles of Science. I had each of the students to look up a particular item. For example, Cole had to print out a document on the flight of an airplane and a laser beam. Joshua had to load CD-ROM disks into the other computers and create icons for each of the disks. James had to go the Internet and find "Biology" under the "AOL School".
Our "resources" tutoring session went very well. I am now convinced that the students can do a lot of their research papers on their own with what we have at our disposal. Several of the mothers came over and we discussed our plans for the year 2001. We have to engage ourselves in a major fundraiser to facilitate a trip to some far off place next year. All of our single mothers are very interested in the education of their children and that is a part of my motivation to help all that I can.
I was extremely gratified when the students stood in my driveway before leaving to go home. The time was approximately 8:30PM. I was gratified and thankful for another day of tutoring. I was gratified that Cole was an "A" student, as well as Jarrell, as well as James, as well as Jeremiah, as well as Treyci, as well as Cleasena and as well as Joshua.
Our next tutoring day will be on Sunday, August 20, 2000 at 1:30PM. There should be approximately 20 students in attendance.
(The previous Lesson Review has been archived and is now called Lesson Review 3ArA. It dealt with maximum and minimum calculus problems, fractions, electrical theory and some history. For a copy, send an e-mail)
Looking back a day or two: Lesson Activity...August 15, 2000
Our student, Keyotta (15), came in # 3 in the 800-meter run at the Junior Olympics in New York in July, 2000. She is a "super star" and we all congratulate her on her accomplishment. I took Keyotta with me to visit the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and to lunch. I reviewed the large model of "power and water flow" into the Los Angeles basin found in the lobby, and took her to see our Electrical Engineer Tutor, Mariko Mariannes. I introduced Keyotta to many of the employees at the Department and told her of the salary range of each. Keyotta had a very nice time. The lunch was a way of saying "thank you" for a high G.P.A. at Long Beach Polytechnic and for being the 3rd fastest 800-meter runner in the United States in her age range.
