More and More Students.....
The number of students is steadily growing. Two new students were in attendance on this day. They were Charlene, 13, and Natalie, 15. The number of students is growing despite my previous "cap" of no more than 12. It seems that I can not say no to students who want to improve themselves.
Asia, Cassandra, Cleasena, Sheena, Charlene, Natalie, Shavonn, Keyotta, Jamise: the girls range in age from 13 to 18 years. Jeremiah, James #1, James # 2, Jarrell, Michael, Matthew, Andre, Deandre, Jarrett: the boys range in age from 12 to 15 years. That makes the total number of active students 18 at this time.
The tutoring session began after church. It was on to McDonald's to buy fast food at 12:00 PM (Carson) and partake of it while engaged in conversation. Of course, I was isolated (at a table by my lonesome) as so many grownups are, during teen talk, and I didn't mind missing out on who was "cute" and who was not.
We drove to a Church in Carson to pick up other students and then it was back home for tutoring.
It is wonderful that the United States is not involved in a war at this time. It gives the instructors at Inglewood High School and opportunity to do a "mock one". Shavonn had to do a mock war between the United States and a foreign country and she chose America vs. Mexico. I assisted her with the 4 page document. It was down my alley because I like fiction. Shavonn got "into it" and she aimed intercontinental ballistic missiles at our neighbor to the South. The issue was on illegal immigration into the United States and I am sure Shavonn solved that problem for the United States with a defeat of the perpetrators in Mexico. It was ironic that the Vice President of the United States (her school work partner, Cherish), got married to a Mexican citizen after the mock war and had they had 15 children together. That goes to show that we....can all get along!
Keyotta had to do a report on Pythagoras. It was due in January for extra credit work. Keyotta needs to make "A's" to go along with her 800-meter speed at Long Beach Polytechnic. A scholarship undoubtedly awaits the 15-year old with her chase of an Olympic Gold Medal in 2004. Her speed will match that of Marian Jones over the next year or so and she will increase to 2:06:00 in the 800-meter...or thereabouts. Look out, Marian Jones.
The students were taken to a Fun Center off the San Diego Freeway for a couple of hours. They played miniature golf, ate pizza, played video games and had a very good time. Then it was back home again to await parents.
None of the students wanted to go home! Perhaps, it was because of our upcoming vacation from the tutoring service, which is taking place...for me...at this very hour.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year......
