Lesson Review October 1, 2000
A
New Student, Jewel
Welcome Jewel! Jewel is a bright, intelligent young lady. She worked very hard with her beginning Algebra homework and we were on hand to assist her.
Our tutoring began at New Philadelphia A.M.E. Church after the service. Shavonn had a Biology assignment and we got started on it right away in the classroom. The tutoring moved to Dominguez Hills where she completed it through the use of the Internet.
Cleasena, Jarrell, Shavonn, Aubrey, Jarrett, Sheena, Asia, Duane, Jewel and Jeremiah were kept busy doing mathematics assignments.
There was a combined effort to help Asia with her homework assignment. Jarrell and I led the way.
Vicki McAlpine served as Assistant Tutor. She worked with several students in completing their homework. Thank you, Vicki.
Asia, A
new student.
Welcome Asia! Asia is a very hard working young lady.
Vicki
teaches mathematics to the young ladies, while I, Cleophas McAlpin deal with the
Spanish Language with the young men out on the front porch.
Vicki worked very hard with the "properties of equations". She also gave a motivational lecture to the students about the need to do well in Middle and High Schools and in colleges. It is very gratifying to see young people teaching the young people, on a voluntary basis. I want to invite all to assist with the education of our youth.
Asia made up her own problems and we assisted her with them. An example is shown below.
Let a=2/3, b=2^4, c=0.2, d=5/6, e= 3^3
Evaluate: 3a + 5b - 6c - ad + abcde
Asia is now able to work such a problem and we are certain that her examination at Drew Magnet School will be a "snap" on next Monday.
I continued teaching the young ladies after Vicki had left. They sat for nearly one and one-half hours and did problems relating to mixed fractions. I find that we must review, on a continuous basis, fractions, decimals, percents, exponents, scientific notation and other basic mathematics. I also find that a lot of students somehow "miss the mark" when it comes to a full understanding while in their respective Middle Schools. That is why we are such an important Organization. We focus heavily on those "missed" subjects and do not leave them until there is a complete and absolute understanding. I believe that Asia and Jewel are well on their way to that understanding.
Tutoring officially ended at 7:00 PM. Andrew Williams came to pick up Jeremiah and Roy Gentry came to pick up Shavonn and Jarrett. We are a powerful Organization because of so many volunteer workers.
We thank and praise God for that!
